What we Want
We socialists want to make childcare affordable for all Americans. How are we going to do it? Just like at home, when you want to pay for something, you start with the question, how much money do I have?
We've begun by researching what Los Angeles County could do to provide childcare. This is the closest level of government to us, so we are starting there.
In 2025 our county budget was about 52.5 billion dollars. You can see the chart at the bottom on how that money is raised and how it is used.
Expanding state-subsidized childcare would be a new expense, so how do us socialists propose we pay for it? Just like at home, to pay for something new we could cut a different expense or we can raise more money.
First of all, how much would this childcare expansion cost? We're talking from 0-3 years old. Because from 4-17 it's already covered in the public school system.
Considering Transitional Kindergarten (TK), which is for 4 year olds, costs about 9K per student, and caring for younger children is more expensive, let's say that caring for children from 0-3 would cost 18K per child.
There were about 100,000 children born in LA County in 2022. So 100,000 time 18,000 means $1.8 billion/year/100,000 children and since we are looking at funding childcare for children for 4 years (0-3) that is $1.8 billion * 4 = $7.2 billion dollars per year.
So, for LA County which has a budget of $52.5 billion we are looking at raising it by $7.2 billion dollars to a total of $59.7 billion dollars; a nearly 14% increase.
How will we raise that money?
